DESCRIPTION OF RACE
First run in 1955, the AUD$500,000 Coolmore Lightning Stakes (G1) is run at Flemington Racecourse over 1000 metres (5 furlongs), with horses 2yo & Upwards carrying Standard Weight-for-Age.
The race is conducted on a straight course, of a width of up to 30 metres, and with a field limit of 16 horses.
The Flemington straight course, starting from a chute that joins the course proper, is perfectly flat. Riders usually take one side of the course or the other, to use the rail to guide their mounts, and sometimes the field “splits”. Recently, a trend has developed wherein the field sometimes races on the middle of the course. The Flemington racing surface was fully renewed after a total track reconstruction in 2007.
The course record for 1000m historically at Flemington is 55.5 sec, set in 1988.
