DESCRIPTION OF RACE

First run in 1960, the AUD$1,000,000 Patinack Farm Classic is run at Flemington Racecourse over 1200 metres (6 furlongs), with horses 3YO & upwards carrying Standard Weight-for-Age.

The race is conducted on a straight course, of a width of up to 30 metres, and with a field limit of 20 horses. The Flemington straight course, starting from a chute that joins the course proper, is perfectly flat. Riders traditionally took one side of the course or the other, to use the rail to guide their mounts, and sometimes the field would “split”.

In recent years, a trend has developed wherein the field races up the middle of the course. The Flemington racing surface was fully renewed after a total track reconstruction in 2007. The course record for 1200m historically at Flemington is 1-07.16, set in 2001.
